Harbors
The harbors have always been important throughout Luleå’s history. When the railway was established they lost their role as the city’s trade hubs. Södra Hamnleden was built in addition to the railway and is today a huge barrier between the city and the southern harbor.
Green spaces
The only green spaces in Luleå are Gültzauudden, Hermelinsparken, Stadsparken and Floras kulle, all located on a horizontal axis through the city.
Functions
With orange dots as commercial functions and pink as cultural the image above shows how all functions are clustered around Storgatan, leaving the rest of the city empty and makes distances appear larger than they are.
To improve:
– Make the harbors attractive again.
– Add more green to the structure on a vertical axis with crossing at Storgatan – Nygatan.
– Mix functions, create connections and focus on non-commercial functions.

– Enjoy the view over Luleå archipelago
– The green crossing at the southern link brings you over to Nygatan.
– The green Nygatan, an organic public space different from the rest of the city center.
– Nygatan continues with green spaces, seating, cafés and restaurants.
– Storgatan offers shopping at the crossing with Nygatan.
– Take a fika, play or watch a show at the outdoor stage on the new square.
– Enjoy the waterfront from the seats of from the roof of the buildings.
– Take a walk in nature along Gültzauudden.
WINTER:
– Ice road or Nygatan – you decide!
– Bring your kick or walk along the white Nygatan.
– Experience ice sculptures, theater and playground in the City Park connected to Nygatan.
– Storgatan with shopping and winter markets.
– Learn to skate or watch ice shows at the new square.
– Experience Luleå from water on the ice road by skates, feet or kick.
